At least, in my opinion: a trifold brochure. When I have a book signing, speaking event, teach a writing workshop, or mail out a promotional copy of one of my books to a reader, I have brochures ready. At book signings, I give them to customers when they walk in the store or where ever I happen to be. While they browse, they can read the brochure. A high percentage of people come back and buy a book before they leave.

At speaking events and teaching workshops, I have my brochures handy, so those in attendance can learn more about me and my books. I do a lot of online interviews with book giveaways. When I send a book to a winning reader, I also send a brochure to pique the reader’s interest in the rest of my series or future books.

What should you put in your brochure? Here’s the layout of mine:

 On the front:

* Professional headshot

* Name

* Genre (since everyone isn’t crazy about romance, I went broad: inspirational author, though the heartbeat graphics and kissing couple probably give me away)

* Awards

* Graphics that fit my genre (a professional looking border works fine too)

* Bible verse that guides my writing


* Back cover blurb of each book I’m currently promoting

* The cover of each book

* Awards for each book

* Coming soon titles

On inside flap:

* Bio

* Website address

* Blog address

* Group blog addresses

* E-mail (a special one I’ve set up just for readers)

* Facebook address

* Twitter address


* An overview of the setting of my series

* A short Roman’s Road to Salvation

 Some things that could be implemented:

* Links to online interviews

* Other social networking addresses

* Awards won by other books than what you’re currently promoting

* Upcoming book signings, speaking engagements, or workshops

* Just about anything that will give the reader insight into you or your books

In other words, the possibilities are endless. Be creative. And you don’t have to be a computer guru to design a brochure. All you need is a graphics program. I’m very computer challenged (just ask Linda) but I put together my own brochure. If you go through a lot of brochures, it’s cheaper to print one copy and take it to a print shop than to print your own.

    You’ll be amazed how quicky you can fill it up. There’s really not that much room.
    I forgot to mention: writers’ groups you’re a member of. Any contest wins. Anything in print – articles, short stories, essays.

    Once you get your marketing lined out, it’s not that time consuming.
